Palawan Birding Program

Day 01
MANILA / PUERTO PRINCESA / NARRA

Morning flight to Puerto Princesa. Drive to Narra. Two hour drive to the
southern part of Palawan. Check-in at for accommodation.

Afternoon drive to Natures Park in Malatgao. Spend an hour bird watching
in its river and forest enclosure. Then proceed to Katala Foundation
Office to register for the Rasa Island Tour. Land and boat transfers Rasa
Island-home to the remaining Cockatoos in Palawan. In Rasa, proceed
by boat to the mangrove and viewing deck. Birding in the afternoon and
then walk to the western side of the island to view other kinds of birds.

Rasa has more than 68 species of birds such as the Blue-headed Racquet-
tail, the Black-naped Oriole and the White-vented Shama. Board boat to
navigate southern shores to watch for cockatoos roost aling the island.
Return to the resort for dinner.  


Day 02
NARRA / IWAHIG RIVER / PUERTO PRINCESA / SABANG

At dawn, depart for Rasa Island to watch the cockatoos leave their village
where food is abundant. Years ago, villagers planted malungay trees as
trees as part of their effort to save the cockatoos. After a short urban
birding, return to the resort for breakfast and leave for the next destination.
Drive on the main road to Iwahig, known as a prison without bars. Along
the way is the Iwahig river-home to many birds of the islands. Most
commonly found here are the Philippine Cuckoo-Dove, Yellow-throated
Leafbird and Blue Paradise Flycatcher.

Enjoy a late lunch at Puerto Princesa then drive to Puerto Princesa
Subterranean River National Park. En route take time to stop for some
bird observation at the Buenavista and Cabayugan. Walk up the hill
to a cleaning withing the forested area to spot some night endemic birds.

 

Day 03
SABANG / UNDERGROUND RIVER

Before dawn, leave by boat for Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National
Park and explore its rick verdant forest where giant lizards and wild monkeys
roam. The park is known for its 8.2 kilometer long underground river covered
by karst limestone. The Park is home to the Palawan peacock-pheasant and
other birds such as the Palawan Tit, Eastern Reef Egret, Palawan Blue
Flycatcher, Palawan Hornbill and Blue-naped Parrot.

After breakfast, spend the day underground then move up to the Monkey
Trail. Trek to the Forest Ranger Station. Birds seen along the jungle trail
are Tabon Scrubfowl, Green Imperial Pigeon, White-vented Shama, Palawan
Hornbill, Oriental Dwarf-Kingfisher, Dollarbird, Ruddy Kingfisher, Common
Flameback, Hooded Pitta and Blue-naped Parrot. Lunch to be served at the
Forest Ranger Station. After lunch, proceed by boat to the mangrove area
and enjoy relaxing mangrove tour by able boatmen who are also
knowledgeable bird guides. Return late afternoon to Sabang. Dinner and
accommodation at the resort..
  

 

Day 04
SABANG / DOS PALMAS

Breakfast. Early departure for transfer to Dos Palmas Island Resort and
Spa in Honda Bay. Lunch at the resort. Afternoon bird watching on the
island. Dinner and overnight at the resort.

 

Day 05
DOS PALMAS / PANDAN ISLAND 

Breakfast. Early departure to Pandan Island for Bird watching. Common birds
sighted on the island are Spotted Dove, Tabon Scrubfowl, White-collared
Kingfisher, Zebra dove, Olive-backed Sunbird, common Sandpiper and
Eastern Reef-Egret.

Stay late within the Island and wait till the roosting of the birds, Dinner and
and overnight in Dos Palmas.

 

Day 06
DEPARTURE

Breakfast. Take morning transfer to Puerto Princesa by boat and bus
